In a tragic incident that unfolded in Yemen’s Al Bayda province, a baby boy born with a single eye could not survive and passed away on Wednesday. This unusual event gained global attention when Yemeni journalist Karim Zarai shared pictures of the newborn in an incubator on Twitter.
The images depicted the infant with a lone eye, a highly exceptional case that Zarai referred to as “a very rare occurrence known in Greek mythology.” Reports suggested that such instances have been documented only six times in approximately five centuries.
The snapshots, taken at the Al Bayda hospital, showcased the baby with a solitary eye socket and a single optic nerve. Zarai underscored the exceptional nature of the case, drawing parallels to Greek mythology.
Medical authorities, attributing the condition to a congenital deformity, clarified that Hussein al-Abbasi had taken his wife, Zahra al-Abbasi, to the Al-Hilal maternity hospital in Radaa for the delivery. The incident was recognized as a consequence of the use of “prohibited weapons” in various regions of Yemen.
The official explanation emphasized that these birth defects were not genetically linked, highlighting that Zahra had previously given birth to healthy children. This incident sheds light on the devastating impact of banned weapons in several Yemeni areas, resulting in congenital deformities in newborns.
